loosening the warp

A sacred liberatory retreat for ‘white’ bodied kin dedicated to loosening and dismantling white supremacy
in service of freedom kinships and collective liberation. loosening the warp is a life-affirming quest
to free ourselves from race thinking and behaviour.

Context

“Racism is a problem in the psyche of whiteness that white people must take responsibility to solve”. Renni Edo Lodge - Why I am no longer talking to white people about Race

“We cannot create new societies or ways of supporting without evolving emotionally as a collective of people
on Earth.”
Jennifer Mullan – Decolonising Psychotherapy

“But white-body supremacy doesn’t live in our thinking brains. It lives and breathes in our bodies”. Resmaa Menakem -
My Grandmother’s Hands

About this retreat

loosening the warp is a retreat space for ‘white’ bodied kin to attend and address the racialised ‘whiteness’ which influences our bodies, psyches and social systems. In a sanctuary space we explore embodied, artful and ritual practices to support our part in dismantling racism. These are sacred, responsive and emergent encounters for reweaving the warp and weft fabric of society for cultures of liberation.

“I felt my heart, mind, body and soul were attended to this deep exploration and loosening. I am now bringing my life’s threads together to feel more sure about creating a community for this work to continue in my life,
together with others.”

In this collective space we loosen the warp of white supremacy within:

a safe and supportive sanctuary of witness, respect and reverence for decolonising our selfhood and our cultures in the everyday;

emancipatory practices with matter and metaphor, memory, imagination and mystery held within the vessel of ritual;

a spaciousness of time for deepening into realness, heart listening and feeling to enable exploring and expressing hidden and forgotten parts of ourselves;

a recognition of our relational sovereignty which connects our vast sensuous intelligences with spirit of place and the sentience of Mother Earth;

a liberatory dining experience to explore our relationship with food as a daily practice in decolonising our bodyminds;

a dwelling of nurturance, comfort and tranquillity amidst granite and moorland habitat;

the affirmation and celebration of our ‘white’bodied dedication to liberatory healing;

“ I understand it in my body. I feel reconciled to the many different strands that ‘loosening the warp of whiteness’ encompasses … the unpicking of stories, the acknowledging of the racism, the letting go and embracing … “

Together, through loosening the warp of white supremacy we co-create the conditions to be:

* showing up in solidarity for dismantling white supremacy and race thinking;

* in kinship and community for engaging in this deep, vital and restorative justice work;

* resourcing ourselves with collaborators, fresh insights and expanded orientations;

* cultivating openhearted trust and enthusiasm as agents of change;

* discovering more of wholehearted selves as we decolonise our own bodyminds;

* renewing our will, impulse and capacity for practising collective liberation;

* developing resilience, agility and capacity for coalition-building;

* nurturing freedom kinships with each other and sentient earth;

* decolonising our palate, food cultures and the planet everyday every mouthful;

“I sense a deeper understanding of connection to others and how this gives power for me to develop ways to commit to ending white body supremacy.” Retreat participant
